4 GREAT REASONS TO GET ON YOUR BIKE

Is there a bike gathering dust out in your shed? Before you renew your gym membership, consider giving cycling a go. Sure, you may have been a teenager the last time you relied on pedal power, but like the old saying goes, once you learn how to ride a bike you never forget.

Cycling Improves Your Fitness

Riding your bike will improve your cardiovascular fitness. You probably already knew that. What makes cycling stand out compared to many other sports is that you can start with only a basic level of fitness. You can ride as slowly as you feel comfortable for as short an amount of time as you like. Don’t worry, cycling is also one of the fastest ways to build up stamina. Before you know it, your ten-minute ride to the shop will turn into a one-hour stretch of 30 kilometers of road. Sound like an unachievable goal? Many people have gone from having a low fitness level to 30-kilometer rides in as little as three months.

Cycling Can be Free

Most people have a bike somewhere in their garage, as well as a pair of running shoes and some gym clothes. This is all you need to start. You may in time decide to invest in a better bike or proper cycling gear, but this is optional. If you want to keep things simple, cycling doesn’t have to cost a lot of money.

Cycling Helps the Environment

Last year in Australia more bikes were sold than cars. More and more people are cycling to work, to the shops, or just around the block for fun. Choosing to cycle rather than drive reduces your carbon footprint. When you choose two wheels instead of four you are making a difference to the environment.

Cycling is Social

No matter your age or fitness level, there is a group of cyclists waiting for you to join their ranks. Cycling is a very social sport. Many people choose to bike with friends or family or on their own, while others join cycling groups. Most cycling groups will meet at a set spot, complete a ride together, then stop for a coffee and chat at the finish line. This is a great way not only to get some exercise, but to meet new people. You never know who you will meet when you are on your bike.
