5 TIPS FOR RUNNING IN THE RAIN

Runners want to run, that's a given. But what if it is raining outside? As it turns out, running in the rain is perfectly fine with a few precautions.

1. Shield your eyes.

The simplest way to keep your eyes protected is to wear a brimmed hat, such as a baseball cap. A thin, breathable hat is best, especially in warm weather. Wearing a visor is another option for shielding your eyes.

2. Wear light clothing.

Adding on extra layers of clothing will not keep you any drier. After just a few minutes you will be lugging around a set of heavy, sodden clothes, undoubtedly making for a horrible running experience. A single layer of thin, lightweight, moisture-wicking material is a much better choice. Synthetic fibers such as polyester and polypropylene are ideal for wet weather running. Socks made of moisture-wicking fabric are preferable as well.

3. Protect from chafing and blisters.

Moisture contributes greatly to chafing, which means that chafing and blisters (already an issue for some runners in dry weather) are much more likely when it's raining. Runners should protect themselves by slathering onVaseline (or a similar product) to problem areas such as feet, underarms, and inner thighs -- or any spot where chafing or blistering has occurred before.

4. Dry Off.

Once you've completed your wet-weather run,you need to get both you and your running shoes dry quickly. Remove your wet clothing, dry off, and put on some dry, fresh clothes. Loosen your shoe laces and stuff them full of crumpled newspapers. The newspaper will draw moisture, helping the shoes dry faster. This is important, since moisture can warp shoes. Be sure not to put your shoes in the dryer or on a heater, which could also cause your shoes to warp.

5. Stay safe.

Here are a few examples of when running in the rain is not safe. A low temperature paired with rain can make outdoor running dangerous.Running in a thunderstorm is also a bad idea, due to the risk of lightning strikes. Strong rains with the potential to cause flash floods pose a major risk as well. In these circumstances, just stay inside. In poor visibility, you should watch your step and wear bright clothes or reflective tape to attract the attention of motorists. Follow these precautions when necessary.
