The Magnificent Mile Race

raleigh, nc

The Magnificent Mile Race is a flat and fast 1-mile race in Downtown Raleigh. The race is the USATF 1 Mile Championship, but is also open to all runners. How fast can you run 1 mile?

The Magnificent Mile Race starts and finishes on Hillsborough Street near Harrington Street in Downtown Raleigh.  The race course heads east on Hillsborough, circles the NC Capitol Building, and returns west on Hillsborough Street.

One of the many beauties of the mile is its accessibility. Whether you’re just beginning your fitness journey, simply want to enjoy an afternoon stroll, or happen to be a serious endorphin junkie, the mile meets your need.

As the NC-USATF State Championship, The Magnificent Mile Race draws some incredible runners. State records for both men and women have been set on our course, as well as multiple age-group records. Bobby Mack set and still holds the men’s record, which he set in 2009 with a time of 4:10.  On the women’s side, Brittany Copeland of Wilmington smashed the NC-USATF  state record last year with her time of 4:51. That record had stood for 15 years.

Once again, we have an incredible elite field coming together. In addition to local heroes like Bobby Mack and brothers Sandy and Logan Roberts, the race is beginning to attract elite men and women from outside of North Carolina. This year, we’ll be welcoming Christy Cazzola as well as Tom Schmitz of California, along with a slate of talented Masters runners.

What’s more fun than a block party? A block party taking place alongside an exciting mile race!

We will once again have our Street Fair on Harrington. Many thanks to The Q Shack for providing outstanding food, and to Planet Smoothie for delicious beverages. We’ll also have lots for the kids to do. Mimi the Clown, picture below, and one of her fabulous assistants will be painting faces all afternoon long. There will also be a bouncy house and a video-gaming truck courtesy of Games2U.

We’re excited to announce that the beneficiary of this year’s Mag Mile is the Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter of the ALS Association. The Catfish Hunter does absolutely incredible things for individuals and families in North Carolina who are affected by motor neuron disease. In fact, 77% of its annual budget goes towards local programs right here in North Carolina.
