The 5K course is a single loop beginning at the band shell behind the Elkin Rec Center and crossing the two new bridges over the Big Elkin Creek. After the second bridge crossing, the run will proceed to the Elkin Reservoir Lake to the new mountain bike course. The route will meander through woods over hilly terrain crossing two small creeks and an old brick bridge while running parallel with the Big Elkin Creek. The last half mile will be a flat and fast finish to the park while enjoying the views of the Shoe Factory waterfall, autumn leaves and the Big Elkin Creek.
The proposed route for the 25k will use all of the Elkin Valley Trails Mountain Bike Course, including the new Iron Falls Loop. The course will also use the Mountains to Sea Trail and a spur that goes around Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery. Headed west, runners will go through the "enchanted forest" to Byrd's Branch Campground, where there will be an aid station and restrooms. Just past the campground runners go by Carter Falls. This is the halfway point. Turn around and go back the way you came. Expect lots of elevation change and numerous water features - Big Elkin Creek, Grassy Creek, Crooked Creek, lakes, and several waterfalls, including Carter Falls.
Proceeds from this race benefit the Elkin Valley Trails Association in construction of bridges and trails from Elkin to Stone Mountain. To learn more visit www.Elkin Valley Trails.org.
