Zombie-thon 5K and Health Walk

Rome, GA

Two start times provide serious 5k'ers a clean run to finish while Zombie 5k'ers will dodge apocalyptic corpses (in costume) while trying to maintain their life (flags that the zombies will try to snatch....like flag football). A health walk is also an option for fun as well. Block Party afterwards.

Ready for Some Apocalyptic Fun?

What is Zombie-thon?
Zombie-thon is not your typical 5K Run and 2 Mile Health Walk. Come brave the wave of the Zombie Apocalypse and try to survive! As you run the 3.2 miles through the once peaceful trails and streets of downtown Rome, Georgia, the undead are ready to greet you - some are hungrier than others.

How does this work?
Runners will be equipped with a flag belt and will try to finish with belt intact. But watch out! Brain eating Zombies situated along the course will try to snag your flags, a.k.a. "eat your brains" before you cross the finish line. But you don't have to wear a flag belt to enjoy the race; it just adds an extra challenge for those wanting the full Zombie-thon experience.

Are the Zombies mean? Will they chase me?
Rome Zombies are well behaved. They stay in a defined area and will not give chase. They have been instructed to snag flags only. The key is to bob and weave around them when you encounter them on the course.

Is there an age limit to participate as a Zombie?
Yes! This is new for 2014. Zombies must be at least 16 years of age to participate.

Will I be able to defend myself against the Zombies?
While Zombies may look scary, please remember they are just volunteers and not actual zombies (as far as we know…). That means just as they have been instructed not to make contact with you, you CANNOT MAKE CONTACT with the Zombies. All runners/walkers/zombies will sign a code of conduct agreement before participating and those who are overly aggressive will be removed from the course immediately and will not be allowed to finish the race.

Can I wear a costume and bring props?
We encourage costumes and will host a costume contest before the race. However, in order to keep everyone safe on the course PROPS ARE NOT PERMITTED.
If you arrive at the race with a prop, you will be asked to leave it behind before you are allowed to start the race. You will be running from Zombie's so we do recommend that you wear comfortable clothing. If you want to dress up in full Zombie attire and make-up, we encourage you to volunteer to be a Zombie on the course.

Where should my flag belt go?
The flag belt should wrap around your hips with flags situated on each hip.

What happens if I don't survive?
If our Zombies were real, you couldn't finish the race, but since it is just pretend, you're still running an official race! Continue to the finish line because you are still eligible for awards. If you cross the finish line with your flag belt intact, a.k.a. your brains, then you've crossed with your life and you get bragging rights with all your friends -both alive and undead. Race times will be posted after the race at Bridge Point Plaza and online.

I'm running to place in the race, how do I avoid Zombies?
New in 2014: Runners who do NOT want to wear flags will have a seperate, earlier start. Race times will be posted after the race close to the finish line. Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in all age categories.

I'm walking the 2 Mile Health Walk, will the Zombies hunt me?
No, you will see Zombies along the course but they will not see you. They are looking for runners wearing flag belts - their brains taste better or something. If you want the opportunity to run from Zombies you will need to register for the 5K. But register early, the full Zombie-thon experience with flag belts is limited to the first 400 registrants.

My child wants to participate, but isn't up for the 5K, how can she/he participate?
New for 2014, we are offering a 1-mile fun run for children 10 and under. The fun run will not be timed. We enourage our littlest runners to dress up as Zombies or their favorite Halloween character and join the fun. The fun run will take place prior to the timed races.

Do Zombie Volunteers need to do their own makeup?
You can do your own Zombie make-up or you can show up 1 to 2 hours prior to the event to get "Zombified". Make-up artist will be on-site to create your Zombie look for a fee.
New for 2014: More make-up artists will be on-site.

Can Zombies be physical with the runners?
Zombies are instructed to only "eat brains" a.k.a. "grab flags". We ask every Zombie Volunteer to remember the Golden Rule and to treat others as one would like to be treated.

Can I spectate?
We welcome spectators to encourage our runners and walkers throughout the course, plus spectators will enjoy the block party at the finish line.

What cause is this race supporting?
All proceeds from the event will support recreational programs and parks in Rome and Floyd County.

Will we party after the race?
Yes and it will be apocalyptic! Join us for a block party at the finish line after the race on Broad Street. It's open to everyone including zombies, survivors, spectators and families. There will be two stages on Broad Street with live bands. The night will be complete with the most amazing fireworks show you've ever seen in Rome. Get the full details on the entertainment, music line-up and fun.

Can I bring my dog?
Leave your dogs, cats, ferrets, monkeys and other pets at home. They don't react well to Zombie Outbreaks or fireworks.
