In its 17th year, the Dakota Five-O continues to entice riders from across the country. From the pristine, handbuilt singletrack that graces much of the course, to the high spirited after party, riders are impressed with the event and the beautiful town of Spearfish in which it is held. Every year we are told from experienced, professional riders, trying the Five-O for the first time, that it is one of the top ten races they have ever competed in. And for some it is their all time favorite!
Last year's race had us a bit worried at the start, as the weather forecast was calling for an 80% chance of rain for the day. But the rain held off and the temps stayed warm, as over 600 riders left the start and were able to enjoy some of the best riding conditions to date, something we like to call 'Hero Dirt'. On course riders were graced with 4 aid station and one 'Bacon Station', which was so named, as over 60lbs of bacon is handed off to riders passing through or stopping in for a rest. And after the ride, everyone who participated was offered a free plate of food and many fine beers, courtesy of Barbacoa's Burritos and Crow Peak brewery. There was also plenty of live music to enjoy throughout the day.
Last year Kelly Magelky from Denver,CO took the mens win with a time of 3:41:00, and Jenna Rinehart from Mankato MN took the womens win with a time of 4:13:23. Over $30,000 in cash and prize merchandise was given away to overall winners and other race participants lucky enough to have their name drawn at the prize raffle. Sram/Quarq threw down some top notch prizes, which included an XX1 power meter, for the top 5 overall mens and womens winners, and a variety of other great product for the prize raffle. The prize table was also overflowing with Pearl Izumi, Twin Six, and other local sponsors. A big thanks goes out to Barbacoas, Bay Leaf Café, and Crow Peak Brewing for serving up some great grub and drink, post race. And finally, a huge shout out goes to Les Heiserman for designing another amazing, Five-O fever, logo for this year's T-shirts. His artwork continues to impress!
