Please join us on Tuesday June 19, 2018 for the 2nd Annual ROC Juneteenth 5K. The race will take place in Rochester, New York at Genesee Valley Park. Located along the Genesee River, the certified 5K course offers runners beautiful and scenic park views on winding asphalt roads. There will be light food and refreshments following the race and the committee will be announcing several enhancements in the coming weeks.
Juneteenth is the celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States on June 19th, 1865. General Gordon Granger led 2,000 Union soldiers to Galveston, Texas with the news that slaves were now free. This news was kept from the 250,000 slaves for two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Rochester, the home of Frederick Douglass, is the perfect place to host this annual run and there is no better charity to support this day than Teen Empowerment! Teen Empowerment is a neighborhood based youth organization that enables low-income youth in the Southwest of Rochester to take meaningful action to improve their lives and communities. TE's overall mission is to empower youth and adults as agents of individual, community, and institutional change.
No one is free unless we are all free!
The 5K race will start and finish at Genesee Valley Park. The official start time is set for 6:00pm using USATF Certified Course #NY14904KL.
