Dear Friend of Racine Habitat for Humanity:

It is with great pleasure that we take this time to inform you about the 1st EVER “Run for Shelter” which will be held on Saturday September 30, 2017 starting at 9 AM at Island Park in Racine, Wisconsin.  The Run for Shelter will benefit Racine Habitat for Humanity and is in celebration of World Habitat Day on October 2nd with 100% of the proceeds going towards our Local Build Program.

We are asking for your support by registering for the event at www.itsyourrace.com.  Sign up as an individual, or better yet, sign up your family, friends and coworkers as a group and participate in this exciting event together!  We are hoping to have the largest turnout to date for this event to raise money and awareness of Racine Habitat for Humanity and we can only do that with your help.  If you are not interested in participating as a runner or walker, but would still like to help, you can sign up as a volunteer, become a sponsor of the event, or donate directly to Racine Habitat for Humanity at www.HabitatRacine.org.

The Run for Shelter 5K starts at Island Park on Saturday, September 30th and follows the path of the Root River (Click Here to see the course map).  The trail includes educational signposts that describe the role the river played in the development of Racine.  The pathway offers an opportunity to see Racine as it cannot be seen from a moving vehicle, to identify plants and trees native to the region and to appreciate the ecology of the Root River system. Interestingly, over 20 of the houses that Racine Habitat for Humanity has built, are within three miles of the race course!

Racine Habitat for Humanity has built and sold 87 homes in Racine since its inception in 1988.  Our program not only provides an opportunity for families who cannot get a traditional mortgage to purchase their own house, but also builds up neighborhoods and communities.  According to the National Association of Realtors, home ownership boosts educational performance of children, induces higher participation in civic and volunteering activity, improves health care outcomes, lowers crime rates and lessens welfare dependency.  The reality is that health and education suffer and job opportunities diminish if affordable housing isn’t available.  The stability of home ownership opens the doorway to a better future for families of Habitat homeowners and our neighborhoods.  One Habitat homeowner said that owning the house brought a sense of self-worth, self-esteem and belonging to her community.  Each Habitat house that we sell builds a stronger and safer neighborhood.  Habitat homeowners contributed over $200,000 in property taxes to the City of Racine tax base last year.  All of this positive change leads to better opportunities for local families, and provides a path out of poverty.

Racine Habitat for Humanity is a 501-(c)3 charitable organization.  If you have any questions about the race, sponsorships, or volunteering for the event, please feel free to contact us.

Thank you for your consideration,
