7 TIPS FOR NEW RUNNERS IN 2017

If you want to run for fun and fitness, but are not sure you can do it, be assured you CAN! As long as there is no medical reason that you should not be running, getting from novice status to your first fun run or race is not as daunting as you might believe. With planning and dedication, you will soon find yourself running like a pro. While the idea of hitting the streets and pounding the pavements might fill you with fear at first, understand that every runner you see out there was once in your position. They all are silently cheering you on because they want you to enjoy the health and mood benefits of a lifelong running habit.

1) Plan Your Route

The route for your first runs can make all the difference to how you enjoy the experience. Think about what you want to get out of the run. Park and forest trails are great for those who want to reconnect with nature and don't like the idea of being "watched" by those going about their daily business. On the other hand, stones and roots can lead to ankle twists, and you may find you are missing the stunning surroundings because you are too busy keeping a focus on your feet. Choose an area with well-maintained paths if you do decide to go au naturel. If you choose to run on the roads instead, make sure you have running gear that makes you visible to traffic for safety reasons. As a beginner, you can benefit from choosing a short circular route where you can build up distance without the fear of finding yourself too far from home when you finally hit the wall.

 2) Get the Gear

While it is understandable that no one wants to commit a lot of cash to a new hobby before being sure it is right for them, running in the wrong gear will set you up to fail. At the least, you will need a pair of decent running shoes. Chafing is a real problem for runners due to bad clothing. Choose running tops and pants that wick away moisture to ensure your running experience is much more enjoyable.

3) Handle Your Hydration

You may see people out running without water, but don't try and emulate them. Get yourself a runner's water bottle that is easy to grip and carry it with you on your first outing. You might not need much, and you shouldn't over-hydrate, as this can lead to a stitch. Running with no access to water is a bad idea, especially when you don't know how your body is going to react to the new activity.

4) Take a Tracker

These little gadgets are a great way to track your running progress and show you just how much you have improved since the start, particularly in those moments when you think you aren't getting anywhere. Wearable tech trackers are also easy to carry with you on a run. DO still take your phone, especially if you will be running alone. It is better to be safe!

5) Find a Friend

Starting to run with a friend can be a great way to ensure you stick to the new hobby, as making plans to run together can help you get out there even when you are not feeling it. Choose a friend whose fitness level is the same as yours, as running with an experienced friend can lead to you pushing yourself too hard or becoming disheartened when you can't keep up.

6) Set Some Goals

When you start your running regimen, it is a good idea to set some goals to aim for. Stay motivated by signing up for a running event in your area. Make sure your goals are obtainable. If you're new to running, opt for a 5K race versus a 10K race or marathon. This will give you the necessary motivation to stick to your running routine in the early days.

7) Eating is Important

Many new runners are attracted to the sport because it offers the opportunity to exercise and burn calories without committing to the gym. If you are adjusting your diet and calorie intake at the same time as starting out as a runner, please ensure that you are eating enough to provide the necessary energy for your new hobby. Many runners swear by smoothies and bananas as part of their run prep, while others prefer an oat-based porridge. Make sure to leave at least half an hour after snacking to avoid any unwanted side effects during your exercise. Taking the first steps into a new, active pastime can be daunting, but planning and preparation can help to ensure that your running experience is both rewarding and enjoyable. Following the advice here is a great way to establish a healthy new hobby that you will be able to enjoy forever.
