Matthew Hazelton Memorial 5K

DUNKIRK, NY: Please join us on Saturday June 1, 2024 for the Matthew Hazelton Memorial 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk. Officer Hazelton was a 14 year member of the City of Dunkirk Police Department, serving as the department’s K-9 Officer for the past two years of his career. Matt was also a loving father and devoted husband. Matt lost his long, hard fought battle with ALS on August 6^th 2017. Matt was one of the highest producing officers of the Dunkirk Police Department with both traffic tickets and arrests. He didn’t just write tickets and arrest people either. He talked to them, helped them and did his best to find a solution to their problems. He was active on the Department's Dive Team and Special Response Team.

The loss of Matt has left a void in the community and department that is unable to be filled. Matt’s drive and work ethic was like no other. When he arrived at work, the switch was turned on and did not go off until he was on his way home. It is now our job to make sure that Matt’s name and legacy live on. The Dunkirk Police Benevolent Association will be hosting this 5K to fund a scholarship in Matt’s name that will be awarded to a student, or students, who are planning to continue their education in the criminal justice field. It is also our hope to raise awareness for ALS. On behalf of Matt’s fellow Officers of the City of Dunkirk Police Department, thank you for your support of this year’s event. 

REGISTRATION & PACKET PICKUP
Online registration will remain open right up until 9:30am on race morning. Race day registration and packet Pickup will take place at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center outdoor pavilion from 8am until the start of the race at 9:30am. All participants who register by May 17, 2024 are guaranteed to receive an official race shirt in their selected size. A small quantity of extra shirts will be ordered and distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis until they are gone.

EARLY PACKET PICKUP OPTION: We will offer an early packet pickup option at the Clarion Hotel gazebo from 8-9pm on Friday for those who are interested!

1M Walk Registration .......... $30/$35 after 4/30/24


START/FINISH
The race will start and finish behind the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center using USATF Course #18039JG. Runners will enjoy scenic views of beautiful Lake Erie.

PARKING
There will be plenty of free parking available at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center.

POST RACE CELEBRATION
The post race celebration and awards ceremony will take place at the pavilion area. Participants will enjoy light food, snacks, and refreshments after the race. Award winners will also be announced at approximately 10:45am.

AGE GROUPS & AWARDS
Trophies will be presented to the 1st place overall male and female 5K finishers. Age group awards will be presented to the top 3 male and female 5K runners in the age groups shown below.

14 and under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and older.

CANCELLATION POLICY
There will be no refunds. In the event of foul weather, public safety concerns, or for any other reason deemed necessary by race organizers (ex: state of emergency, etc), we reserve the right to postpone/reschedule the event at our discretion or offer a virtual alternative if necessary. 

TIMING & FINISH LINE SERVICES
Professional timing & finish line services using industry leading Jaguar Electronic RFID timing will be provided by Race Management Solutions. Results are updated throughout the race and can be accessed at any time after crossing the finish line using any one of the following options:
