Students Overcome and Achieve through Running/Walking (S.O.A.R.) is an after school running/walking program for Berwick students enrolled in the Berwick Area Middle School, Berwick Area High School, and Columbia Montour Vo-Tech. The program was developed by faculty at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania in collaboration with community partners and is funded through a strategic grant from the Berwick Health and Wellness Fun of the Central Susquehanna Community Foundation.
The program is designed to challenge middle and high school students to experience the benefits of improved health, goal setting, mentorship, and character development as they train for and participate in a series of running/walking events and educational sessions. During the first year of the program, students trained with dedicated adult and near-peer mentors for the 100th running of the Run for the Diamonds. The Run for the Diamonds continues to be the ultimate race students will train for. However, will need to build up to that 9-mile race and therefore, will compete in a few 5k races to build their confidence level.
Students will celebrate their accomplishments with the support and recognition of Berwick and surrounding communities. It is anticipated that through participation in this program, students will experience improved physical health and subjective well-being.
