2005
I was home on spring break from UD (The University of Dayton).  I hadn't felt quite myself for two weeks prior to coming home but I had no obvious signs of any illness.  Then the week before Easter, I started having chills, backache and a low grade fever.  My doctor ordered bloodwork, that was Good Friday.  On Holy Saturday, March 26th, 2005 around 10:00 A.M. my doctor called.  He said there were blasts in my blood.  What does that mean. . . leukemia.

Here is a summary of my past to the present:
Went to St. Rita's for two weeks of chemo.  Then to OSU James Cancer Hospital for 28 more days of chemo.  Home a few weeks and back for 28 more days of chemo.  There was no bone marrow match to be found.

Aunt Jean Byrne headed a bone marrow drive for me, which I greatly appreciated.  Still no match for me.  There were some donors that were matches for others in need later on.

So OSU sent me to University Hospital in Cleveland for a stem cell transplant.  The doctor said the transplant would be a battle for my life.  I had zero chance of survival without it and a 30% chance with the transplant.  My answer was "I want to live."

On July 14th, I was admitted.  Had chemo then full body radiation.  July 20th was what they called a day of rest.  Then July 21st was Day 1 of my stem cell transplant and July 22nd was Day 2.  After that it was touch and go.  Someone stayed with me every day and night, mainly my Mom.  Then in September, I was released to stay at The Hope Lodge with my Mom.  Three times a week she would take me to the hospital.  On October 6th, I went home and I would return six more times for 2 weeks to 1 months each time.

In August of 2006, I returned to UD.  Then two weeks later, my kidneys failed.  I was life flighted to Cleveland.  I was on dialysis until September 7th, 2007 when my mom donated her kidney to me.

In 2008, I returned to school.  After five years, I graduated with a Bachelors in Visual Communication Design.  I had studied from hospital beds, my bed and in my apartment at UD.  If it wasn't for the extra effort of my professors and staff at UD, I would have never completed my dream of becoming a UD graduate alumni.

From 2012 to present, I've had elbow surgeries, hip surgery, hip replacement, shoulder surgery, shoulder replacement and multiple stays in the hospital due to infections.

Now I am in need of another kidney transplant.

Throughout this journey or nightmare, depending on the day, I have had incredible support from family, friends, neighbors and strangers whom have read my story.

I thank everyone with all my heart for your continued prayers and words of encouragement.  All of you and God are my rock and strength that I need to continue fighting to live another day.

Love,
Krystal
