1st Annual Rocky Mount Hill Challenge
5 Mile Race Benefitting
Franklin County Humane Society and Franklin County Youth Runners
September 8, 2018 8:00 AM
Are you looking to run hills? Did you enjoy the Blue Ridge Marathon (or Double)? Do you look for challenging courses? Then look no further. We have put together an event that includes 5 of the toughest hills Rocky Mount has to offer. This event will benefit the Franklin County Youth Trail Runners as well as the Animal Vet Clinic (link). Due to the reduced pricing of the event no t-shirt will be offered. All finishers REGISTERING BY AUGUST 14 will receive a custom finisher medal!
STATGE 1- WICKED WEST CHURCH
Stage 1 is a 0.8-mile winding cruise through Historic
Downtown before dominating the first hill. Then there will be a chance to regroup at Stop #1 located across from
– TACKLING TANYARD
Stage 2 is a
1.3-mile stint through the Judicial District.
This is a descending preview of East Court (that will be scaled later),
onto a demoralizing climb up Tanyard Hill.
This will bring the course to a water stop and Stop #2 located at the El
Rio Parking lot.
STAGE 3 – EASY PELL RIDGE
stage is a 0.9-mile rolling run Pell Avenue then returning down Tanyard. This allows a small amount of recovery time
before regrouping at the last water stop across from the DMV. This will be the last stop before the finish
STAGE 4- THE SPRINT
The race is
on! The last stage is a 2-mile sprint
starting with the dreaded climb up East Court Street. The feeling of easy hill from earlier quickly
turns to regret as the climb up the monstrous hill ensues. The left turn onto Orchard Avenue will be a
true sign of what runners have left as they speed towards the last right turn
to head back up Main Street. The final ¾
mile hill challenge lays ahead before the final return to the Coast to Coast
parking lot and the Finish Line.
The race pacer will be mid-pack and
will take a 3-minute break at each station upon arrival to fuel,
hydrate, and stretch before tackling the next Stage.
In Rocky Mount our roads aren't just crooked, they're steep too!
