AIDS Walk Atlanta and 5K Run

Atlanta, GA

Welcome and Thank You for joining us and showing your commitment to the fight to end HIV/AIDS as we know it.

THE WALK AND RUN

AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run is the Southeast’s largest community fundraiser and awareness event for HIV/AIDS, benefiting AID Atlanta and 10 other local HIV/AIDS service providers.

Over its history, more than 314,000 people have participated in AWA5K, raising $42M for HIV/AIDS prevention and care, saving countless lives and improving the well-being of thousands still living with HIV/AIDS today. This year, we expect thousands of people to join us. AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run continues until the epidemic ends.

THE EPIDEMIC IN GEORGIA

In 2017 (the last year for which statistics are available), Georgia was ranked second in the nation, behind Washington, DC, for total number of adults and adolescents diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

60% of these new HIV infections came from Fulton, Dekalb and Clayton Counties.  Atlanta ranks number 2 in the number of new HIV/AIDS diagnoses in the state. Of major US cities, Metro Atlanta has the fourth-highest of new HIV infections. Sixty-eight percent of new diagnoses of HIV infection in Georgia were among African Americans.

OTHER INFORMATION

A Special note about gender categories and registration: AID Atlanta, AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run, works to be inclusive and welcoming in all of our operations; however, the USA Track and Field Association requires runners to identify as male or female in order to use participation in road races as a qualifier for future races.  As AWA5K is a qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race we ask all participants to select the gender where they are their most authentic self.

**All of the funds raised by AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run support the programs and services provided by our local ASO partners in our community.**

**AIDS Walk Atlanta invites other 501(c)(3) AIDS service and prevention organizations to participate.**

** Stats: AIDSVu.org, Georgia Dept. of Public Health, and Emory **
