Race Specifics: Event is a Swim 400 m, Bike 10.9 miles, Run 5K, in that order. The starting line is on the outdoor pool deck. Transition area is located outside the pool to the east in the parking lot. Finish Line is located on 2700 East, just east of the transition area. Bib numbers will serve as your starting place and based on your swim times, low numbers (faster swimmers) at the front, high numbers at the back (slower swimmers). Because the race is chip timed, you may switch places with other racers to adjust for inaccurate swim times. You may not switch bibs / chips with another person.
Start / Swim: The race will begin with a “whistle” start. Each racer will line up, single file along the outdoor pool deck and enter the water separated by 10 seconds (official offset will be posted on race day). The course is a 400 meter “serpentine” swim. Racers will begin in the southeast corner (shallow end), enter feet-first, and swim 50 meters (one width of the pool), under the lane line, and swim another 50 meters. Continue this method until 400 meters is complete; you will have swam in 8 separate lanes. Exit the pool from the zero depth splash area and head to the transition area in the east parking lot.
Transition Area: Only participants with official race numbers and bibs will be allowed to enter / exit the transition area. Each racer will select a spot for their bike, transition clothing / supplies; several bikes need to fit on a single rack. Racers are not allowed to ride their bike within the transition area, please follow mount / dismount lines. For your safety, please be aware of other racers entering or exiting the transition area.
Bike: Racers will retrieve their bike from their designated spot in the transition area. Once you have walked your bike out of the transition area, head north on 2700 East and follow the designated bike course. Cottonwood Heights Police will be on the course for your safety but the course is not closed to traffic. Please obey all traffic signals unless you are assisted by Police Officers to proceed. If you need assistance on the course, please contact a volunteer or Police Officer and they will contact race officials. Once you return to the recreation center, you must dismount your bike at the designated line before you enter the transition area.
Run: Racers will exit the transition area and run east on Banbury Road. It is an ‘out and back’ 5K course with a water station at Bywater Park. Again, please be aware of your surroundings and obey all traffic laws.
Finish Line: You must wear your bib on the front of your body and chip on your ankle to cross the finish line. If you do not have your bib and chip on, you may not receive accurate results and will not be eligible for awards. Please help us in keeping the finish line organized and help staff collect your timing chip.
Important Rules:
- Timing is provided by Big Finish Timing staff, if you lose your chip, you will be responsible for the $25 chip replacement.
- Helmets are required in the bike section of the triathlon – you will not be allowed to race without a proper helmet (US Consumer Product Safety Commission approved). You must have your chin strap buckled at all times while on your bike.
- Headphones, Ipod/mp3’s, or personal audio devices are not allowed on the bike route.
- No Drafting (keep at least 3 bike lengths of space between you and the bike in front of you) or block by riding side by side.
